Stephen Street Mosaic Planters

The Commission's first major public art project was to design and execute six large cement planters commemorating historical milestones in the history of the Village of Lemont. These events include the building of the Illinois and Michigan and the Sanitary and Ship Canals.

Lead artist (and former Commissioner) Rob Moriarty and interested artists from the community joined together in a make-shift studio at Lemont High School in the summer of 2005 to hand cut and individually place each of the thousands of colorful ceramic tiles that make up the intricate scenes. These planters joined the two that stand in front of the Village Hall made earlier as the Commission was forming the previous autumn.
