Heritage Quarries Recreation Restoration Project

Saturday, October 21, 2017

The Heritage Quarries Recreation Area is approximately 100 acres located in the Village of Lemont. When in use from 1850 to 1900, these quarries provided the dolomite limestone used in many buildings in northeastern Illinois - including the Chicago Water Tower and Holy Name Cathedral.  Over time, the quarries have filled with water and are now a regional recreational resource.

Volunteers are needed to help restore five acres of natural areas within the Heritage Quarries Recreation Area by removing invasive species.  The goal of this project is to restore plant and animal diversity.

To register to volunteer, go to:  http://www.citgocaringforourcoast.com/event/citgo-heritage-quarries-recreation-area-restoration-event/

Volunteers will meet at Lemont High School, 800 Porter Street, and board a bus for the Heritage Quarries Recreation Area. After working at the Quarries for approximately 2 hours, volunteers will be shuttled back to Lemont High School via bus.

All tools will be provided. Please wear a long sleeve shirt and long pants, and bring a pair of work gloves and a refillable water bottle.

Pizza will be served compliments of Gelsosomo's!

For more information, contact Anna Fratto at the CITGO Lemont Refinery, afratto@citgo.com or call (630) 296-2959 or follow the registration link shown above.
