Lemont Labor Picnic: History & Lunch
Sunday, September 10 2023
12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Lemont has a rich labor history. Like many immigrant workers in the late nineteenth century, Lemont’s quarrymen protested low pay, long hours, and hazardous working conditions by going on strike – and were met with deadly consequences. Labor picnics were one way to bring workers together to organize and advocate for workers’ rights. These efforts would inspire the fight for the 8 hour workday and weave itself into the story of the Haymarket affair.
As part of the Village of Lemont's ongoing 150th Anniversary celebration, join local historians to learn more about Lemont’s part in the National Labor Movement and also to enjoy a lunch catered from local Polish institution, Celina’s Fresh Market! The event will take place in Village Green, 322 Main Street.
